Your Time with Black Rhino. Be a part of a world renowned programme to save this ancient animal - knowing you have taken a part in rehabilitating these endangered animals back into their natural environment will be an experience of a life time. In 1987 at the peak of the rhino poaching in the Zambezi valley, Imire adopted 7 baby black rhino. As a result of behavioural research it has been a very successful breeding programme, as Imire has now released 8 youngsters and 2 adult rhino back into their original natural environment. With the support of National Parks Department the rhino are continuously monitored, are breeding well, and helping to increase the black rhino population in Zimbabwe , A success story. At present Imire has 3 adults and 4 sub adults who are hand fed and handled daily at close quarters. The rhino are penned nightly, and during the day are taken out onto the ranch with their handlers.
For anyone wishing to hear about the experiences of one of the volunteers, Micaela Hamilton has written a blog about her time at Imire. You can find it here.
Medical Aid and Personal Insurance
It is necessary to have you own full medical aid cover and personal insurance. There is a private hospital and doctor 35 kms from the ranch providing an excellent service. For emergencies Medical Air Rescue Service (MARS) will do emergency evacuation.
Please note: All volunteers arriving in Zimbabwe for the project should please try to arrive at any time on one of the first two mondays each month as we are trying to co-ordinate pick ups
