Introducing Imire - a Legacy of Love and Commitment
Imire Safari Ranch is just 105kms east of Harare. You’ll find it in a uniquely fertile and diverse area of endless sprawling bushveld, wonderful indigenous flora and fauna and an altogether extraordinary experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Before the advent of commercial farming, the area was rich in wildlife and what is termed ”plains game”. As evidenced by early rock paintings, all typical species including black rhino and elephant, were present here. Unfortunately, indigenous wildlife species were hunted to make way for cattle and cropping.
So in 1972, Norman Travers of Imire decided to try and restore some of the wildlife, which had once roamed freely in the area. And so Imire Safari Ranch was born, as well as the now world-renowned Black Rhino Breeding Station.
Imire is also one of the first farms to offer homes to young orphan elephants and has instigated research to improve handling and teaching elephants in order for them to be ridden and to work on farms.
Today, you can meet Nzou, a 35-year-old orphaned female elephant that has, over the years, become the matriarch of a herd of buffalo. Makavusi, Toto and Mundevu are elephants that allow you to ride on them, swim with them and share their daily chores…a magical experience.
Imire is easily accessible for day trips, weekenders and longer stays. It is ideal for the family, businessperson or traveller and also for the student, as the animals are easily accessible, too!
